FORTUNE TELLING AND ASTROLOGY

Is Fortune Telling the same as Astrology? Astrology and fortune telling are not the same, atleast for most astrologers.  Although both these forms of art do tell you what is going to happen to you eventually, the similarities end there.  Before divulging into the differences, let us see what fortune telling really is.

What is fortune telling?

Fortune telling is the art or practice of predicting the future, usually that of an individual, for commercial gains.  Fortunes are usually told in a number of ways.  Some of the common means are as follows:

  • Tasseography – reading from tea leaves in a cup.
  • Crystallomancy or Crystal Ball reading, popular mostly among the gypsy community.
  • Cartomancy or more popularly known as Tarot Card Reading
  • Spirit board reading, which itself comes with many different ways of practice.
  • Palmistry
  • Reading – a common practice among people of the African American culture, where in the practitioner transmits to the client ‘advice’ which have come from the spirits or in visions.

So how is Astrology different from Fortune Telling?

Astrology involves, like mentioned earlier, calculations. For an astrological prediction to be made, you would need the place and time of birth, from which a horoscope chart at that exact location and at that exact point of time will be cast.  From this chart, the astrologer makes a prediction depending upon the position of the planets, their characteristics and the transits that will pass.

Fortune telling on the other hand may involve different objects, like crystal balls or tarot cards and has nothing to do with the positioning of the moon or planets.  The so called predictions are entirely always dependent on your leader or practitioner who uses his/ her psychic ability to interpret the meanings of cards and thus divine the future.

Horoscopes, Forcasts And Predictions – How Are They Different?

How does a horoscope differ from a prediction? This is another set of words that are often mixed up. A horoscope can be considered as a mathematically calculated chart of the positions of heavenly bodies at the moment of birth, whereas a prediction is a statement or a claim that a particular event will occur in the future in more certain terms than a forecast. While a forecast tells you what MIGHT happen to you in the near future, a prediction almost most certainly GUARENTEES it.

What are horoscopes based on?

Most horoscopes are based on the Sun Sign or the signs of the zodiac. Your sun signs indicate your basic nature and it is a great starting point for learning about astrology. Also, horoscopes are useful in determining your love partner. To do this, first determine how well the sun signs traditionally get along.  Each of us is a mixed bag of all our planetary traits, so refine the search by using Moon signs and Rising Signs.
